My biggest news this past month is that I sold a cartoon to the New Yorker magazine - the actual print magazine! This is the Holy Grail. This is what I strive for when I draw every day and submit every week, to get a cartoon into the actual print copy of the New Yorker magazine. First of all, it carries the most clout, feels the most substantial and meaningful and like it’s part of a long history of incredible cartoons and cartoonists over the past 100 years. But it also doesn’t hurt that it pays the most.

I’ve been traveling the last 2 weeks with my family and I saw the O.K. as I was about to pull out of a gas station in Connecticut while juggling grumbling kids, energy drinks, and Apple Maps directions, so I felt like I didn’t have much of a moment to really take it in. So let’s celebrate right now. Yay!

Though I’ve had some Daily Cartoons and my recent Shouts piece, it had been a good while since I last sold one to the actual magazine and I was going a little crazy over it. I was chatting with another cartoonist who also hasn’t sold in a bit and we were talking about how we’re constantly second-guessing our work because of it. Do we need to change up our style? Would we sell more cartoons if we made them less silly? More silly?
