Idea Graveyard
Below is my list of cartoon ideas I killed in 2025 - every single one of them. Warning, they are bad. That’s why I didn’t draw them.
When I have a cartoon idea, I write it down in a Google doc on my phone. After some time I read through those and immediately cut out at least half of them. Those rejects end up on my “Cartoon Idea Graveyard” list. Of the ones I hang onto, they go to a different list, my list of cartoons “to draw.“ Often months pass before I get around to all of the ideas on the “to draw” list and with a good bit of hindsight, seeing the ideas fresh, about half of those again get cut and sent to the Graveyard. Sometimes even at the last minute, when I’m about to draw an idea, I decide something just doesn’t feel right in my gut about it, and I cut it, and it moves to the Graveyard. In the end there are far more ideas in the Graveyard than ideas that are actually drawn. At the end of the year I read through the entire Graveyard and reconsider them. Usually I find a few that strike me anew and I resurrect them back to the “to draw” list. But most continue to sit there collecting dust… until today.
